“This story introduces something out of the beaten path ln mysteries, and contains a strikingly novel solution. It is staged in Indianapolis. During the big flood of 1912 Indianapolis lost practically all its bridges, and has since been reconstructing them one by one. The story involves bridge building, bids and contracts, and all the various complications which arise in work of this kind, besides a puzzling contract department leakage; and, naturally, it develops also a bit of a love episode.”

This novello by Harry Stephen Keeler would undergo later transformations—as was typical of the author—and metamorphose into the novel Y. Cheung, Business Detective (1939). In a new preface in this first book publication of Daniel Euston, Jim Weiler offers an intriguing notion as to why Keeler had to seek publishers on the Iberian Peninsula for his later novels.

The trade paperback edition is also embellished with numerous illustrations by Weiler, Tucker and O'Keefe.
